So, everyone is up in arms with the hullabaloo that is the New York Times cartoon allegedly depicting Barack Obama as a monkey, a chimp actually. It is pulling elements such as the demise of Travis the crazy chimp and the controversial stimulus bill.
Something tells me that the NY Times cartoonist, whomever he or she is, didn’t mean for it to be intended in the way it was, they didn’t mean for it to be a racist cartoon. I highly doubt that the New York Times would publish a cartoon they figured depicted the President of the United States as a monkey, a chimp with three bullet holes in it’s chest at that. No way.
More likely, it was intended to simply imply that those who created the stimulus bill are a little on the dull side, perhaps less evolved than the rest of us. It wasn’t meant to draw parallels between black people and monkeys. At least I hope so. For now I am going to give this NY Times cartoon the benefit of the doubt and go with the idea that they didn’t realize the way this would be seen.
In other words, the editors at the New York Times who deal with the cartoon sections are not racist, they’re just stupid.
